A project initiated in 2008 by college friends Daniel Landi and Fernando García, Comando G is likely Spain’s best established “new” producer, offering some of the country’s most sought-after, highly-praised and distinct wines.
“G” stands for the Gredos mountains, where their vineyards are found, and also for granite and Grenache. The inspiration for the project – or perhaps the Pole Star - is Château Rayas and the pair are making Grenache – or Garnacha – with a refinement and elegance that transcends what was traditionally thought possible in Spain.
The keys to this are soil - isolated vineyards high up in the mountains, farmed biodynamically – paired with thoughtful winemaking and a mission to make wines that translate the vineyard to the glass with clarity, finesse and purity.
The range follows a Burgundian-style hierarchy, with “grand cru” Rumbo al Norte at the pinnacle. El Tamboril, Las Iruelas, Las Umbrias and Tumba del Rey Moro follow, then La Brena, Pena La Mora amd Minogogil. La Bruja is the opening wine and a well-priced introduction to the project.
Critical acclaim for the wines has been unanimously strong, with The Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutierrez a particular fan having followed the project from the start.
“Comando G, what to say about Comando G... They have been downsizing their operation and fine-tuning their wines that are expressive of their sites and their vintages, achieving amazing precision.” May 2023
“I tasted the latest bottled wines from Comando G that are hitting the market now, the regional and village wines from 2022 and the single-vineyard 2021s. The two vintages are extremely different, a more Mediterranean 2022 and a cooler, more Atlantic 2021. This is the finest collection of wines I have ever tasted from Comando G, each of them with a different personality, more and more evident each year.” December 2023
“These are among the most inspiring wines produced in Spain today.” November 2020
“They seem to go from strength to strength and are getting closer to their goal with some of their wines achieving world-class status! This is one of the most exciting new projects, not only in Gredos, but in the whole of Spain!” October 2014
“Comando G is a joint venture between the super-talented Jimenez Landi and Fernando Garcia (from Maranones) and Marc Isart (from Navaherreros.) Like the three musketeers, they are out to source fruit from ancient Garnacha vines near the Sierra de Gredos mountains and judging by the exceptional quality of the two 2010s that I tasted, they are doing a very fine job.” October 2012
