Tasting Notes

The wines of Yarra Yering are prized in Australia for their luminescent fruit profiles and masterful handling of tannins both in the vineyard and at the hands of winemaker Sarah Crowe. At five years of age, this 2017 Dry Red No 2 (Rhone Blend) has done nothing but settle into its own self: it has retained the seductive and silky flow of flavor in the mouth that it had on release and shows that time is not bothering it. Almost suspended in animation, the wine verges on unevolved—it has barely moved through its first stage of development. What a superstar. Awesome. Drink 2022-2042.

Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate, December 2022

A firm and silky-tannined red that has such polish, richness and beauty. Lots of spice and fruit-tea character, as well as plums and berries. A blend of 95% shiraz, 3% mataro, 1% viognier and 1% marsanne. Drink now. Screw cap.

95% Shiraz, 3% Mataro, 1% of each Viognier and Marsanne.
Dark crimson. Very together, well-melded confident nose. Already very pleasing on the nose and then tightens up on the end. Tastes neither Australian nor Rhône. Maybe it’s Yarra Yering!

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, November 2019

A nose with the x-factor, straddling the Rhône and Australian styles and not really belonging to either camp, this is uniquely Yarra Yering. 2017 was a cooler year - like 2022 - and the resulting wine is very spicy on the nose, intermingling star anise, pink peppercorn and szechuan aromas with dark plums and cherries. The palate is silky and refined, the tannins supple and integrated with the fruit shining bright. Layers of forest fruits - both red and black - burst forward with notes of liquorice root, fennel pollen and rosemary. This is complex, with herbal layers over ripe but never over-ripe fruit. A bright and cool edge defines this wine, particularly next to the riper, fuller 2020 alongside. I love that edgier, fresher feel - this is a wine you just keep coming back to. Drink now, or over the coming 10-15 (or more) years. Sealed under screwcap.
