The 2023 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is gorgeous. Deep and layered, the 2023 is going to need at least a few years to start coming into its own. Readers should be in no rush. A blast of dark red/purplish fruit, graphite, rose petal, spice and blood orange are all dialed up to the maximum. This potent Sorbo is incredibly promising, but the tannins are rather imposing in the early going. It's a super-classic wine from Panzano's Conca d'Oro. Drink: 2031-2048
The nose is a bit rigid; however, this red is more expressive on the palate. Cherry, blackberry, iron, eucalyptus and tobacco flavors abound, all defined by lively acidity and a line of dense, integrated tannins. Long and detailed, this is built to age.
The organic Fontodi 2023 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Panzano Vigna del Sorbo is lovely, generous and full, with intense cherry and cassis on full display in this exuberant vintage. There is terrific intensity in the mouth, with a seamless quality that brings together structure, concentration and beautiful fruit-forward appeal. I love the generous nature of this wine. Made with selected 100% Sangiovese from a nine-hectare vineyard at 380 meters in elevation on schistic galestro soils, it ferments in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and ages for 24 months in French oak barriques and larger casks.
A complex and layered wine with aromas of graphite, minerals, vibrant red and black cherries, fresh violets and hints of wax and bark. Medium- to full-bodied and refreshing, with a huge tannic structure that’s velvety and refined. Crisp, integrated acidity and a biting palate are well balanced by fruit and meat flavors.
The nose gleams with aromas of black cherry, blackberries, crushed rocks, and wet slate. The palate brings more cherries and berries, over a foundation of dark chocolate and orange peel which is reinforced by pliant but powerful tannins.
