The 2012er Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese offers a very subtle yet ripe nose of rhubarb, candy floss, minty herbs, honeyed yellow peach, verbena, anise, prune, and fine spices. The wine proves delicately smooth and sweet on the palate, where pineapple juice, sweet rhubarb, yellow peach, almond cream, apricot, and a dash of honey are wrapped into zesty elements (including passion fruit) coming through in the juicy and rather structured finish. The aftertaste has some power (the label indicates 9% of alcohol) and plays on bitter-sweet tension. This superb aromatic and juicy Spätlese is already well open for business. Now-2037.
(Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese #06) AP: 06 13. This is quite closed at first and only hints at subtle and elegant notes of flowers, anise and smoke. It then gradually opens up to offer the telltale flowery and herbal notes of the Scharzhofberger. The wine is very pure, airy and pastel-like in finesse on the palate, and yet one feels the extreme complexity lurking in the background. All this leads to a superbly long finish in which some discreet scents of passion fruit lingers one. This will need time and could even exceed our initial and already very positive expectation. It is that impressive! 2022-2037
