The 2019 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru comes from two parcels. Matured in around one-quarter new oak, it has a broody bouquet that demands more coaxing than its peers. It gradually becomes more floral. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit laced with graphite, nicely focused with a surfeit of freshness towards the marine-tinged finish. Very good potential - excellent.
Young vines (2002 and 2009) in both the Mitans and Ormeau sectors). The two plots are across the road from each other, but with soils of a different colour, redder in Ormeau which has fewer stones. A fine bright pleasing purple in colour, certainly more oak showing compared to the village Volnay, excellent fruit weight, a solid middle of the road Volnay.
