Tasting Notes

The 2023 Syrah Schist has a rockier, more flinty bouquet with cracked black pepper, hints of charcoal and sage that entwine beautifully with the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with sculpted tannins, exquisite balance and it comes across tightly coiled but brilliantly defined on the finish. Superb mineralité and focus, this is outstanding Syrah that will age for 10 or 20 years. Drink 2026-2048

Neal Martin, vinous.com, August 2025

Invariably the most perfumed of Chris and Andrea Mullineux's three site-focused Syrahs, this tastes like a wine that was influenced by the Domaine Jamet's Cote Roties, all pepper, rose petal and fennel on the nose, graceful, bejewelled tannins, subtle wood and a core of wild strawberry and tobacco leaf. The best of the winery’s soil-specific reds.

Tim Atkin MW, timatkin.com, September 2025

An excellent, characterful Syrah that has the X-factor, the Schist shows pepper, grilled meats and incense smoke on the nose together with blue-red fruit and a hint of rosemary. The palate follows with the same core of blueberries and ripe red cherries, together with black pepper and a real spiciness to accomplny crunchy tannins and acidity that gives the entire mouthfeel an ease and lightness. Pure and full of potential, this is fleet-footed and dynamic, already delicious but with a great road ahead. Excellent.
