Rivesaltes, Domaine St Michel 1971

Tasting Notes

The 1971 Rivesaltes, which Gayral said might contain 20% Grenache Noir, has a more oxidized and spirituous bouquet that veers more towards a Sercial in style. The palate is medium-bodied, quite mellifluous and harmonious with a spicy entry. White pepper and five-spice build towards the complex, persistent finish. Drink 2025-2042.

20% Grenache Noir …
… and therefore a darker, redder tawny. Very focused and almost bloody in its flavour! Something saline! Hint of leather.

Tawny colour. Deep, layered and savoury on the nose with confit fruit, dried ceps and preserved citrus. The palate is chiselled and focused, the sweetness melting into intense fruit and nut characters. Bright and incredibly fresh at over 50 years old, this highly refined Rivesaltes could be enjoyed as aperitif, with cheese/dessert or as a digestif. Impressive and very fine.
