The 2024 Pinot Noir Mindego Ridge Vineyard Ridge Top soars from the glass with an exotic mélange of inky dark fruit, licorice, new leather, lavender, mocha and crushed rocks. It emerges from the highest block on the property, where fruit matures first. Readers will find a gorgeous, captivating Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot that deftly marries finesse and power. What a wine. (Drink between 2027-2036)
Vines planted 2000 at 925 ft on shale and silty-clay loam 8 miles from the Pacific, picked 15 September, so 11 days before Kutch’s other bottling of Mindego Ridge. Seven barrels filled.
Mid shaded crimson. Rawer fruit and denser than the other Kutch Mindego Ridge Pinot – less charming. Sour-cherry fruit and a bit of tannin with lots of acidity. Made to age, with some real persistence. (JR)
The Ridge Top bottling from Jamie Kutch is beautifully perfumed in 2024. The wine includes fifty percent whole clusters in this vintage and comes in at a svelte thirteen percent octane. The complex and sappy bouquet is nicely black fruity, offering up scents of plums, black cherries, coffee bean, a superb base of dark soil tones, sweet stem tones, a touch of fresh thyme, woodsmoke and a touch of cedar. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and soil-driven, with a sappy core of black fruit, fine focus and balance, suave tannins and a very long, pure and promising finish. This is going to be a lovely bottle once it is ready to drink. (Drink between 2037-2075)
