For a "younger" Banyuls in our range, this wine is already very impressive. Bright garnet in colour, there is a vertical sense to this wine that keeps it remarkably fresh. Showing notes of nuts, sultanas and whiffs of dried cherry, the mature notes of leather and spice are well-integrated here. The palate has a chalky, subtle structure and lively acidity, creating a pithy and lightly sweet profile. The tangy intrigue to this wine almost gives it a structural comparison to Rivesaltes, but the darker, redder fruit keeps the sense of place. Complex and simply delicious.
Tawny-copper in the glass, the nose is smoky and dense, with dried red fruits, leather and pipe tobacco. The palate has much in common with tawny port - full of anise, toasted exotic spices, sultana and christmas pudding. There is grip from sandy tannins and an underlying tone or dried red fruit throughout. Heady, powerful and long on the finish.
Shaded reddish tawny. Light rancio and really sweet with a positively plummy red-fruit character. Drying finish. Too young? (JR)
