Tasting Notes

One of the highlights of this tasting was the 2013 Corton-Renardes Grand Cru, a beautiful wine that bursts from the glass with a surprisingly expressive bouquet of wild berries, plums and spices, complemented by savory bass notes of dark chocolate, game bird and dried ceps. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with terrific concentration, racy acids and a long, penetrating finish. The combination of ultra-refined tannins and mouthwatering cut makes for a very elegant style of Corton-Renardes this year, and it will delight Burgundy purists. 2023 - 2045

The 2013 Renardes from Domaine Gaunoux is also an excellent bottle in the making, but it is more classically reserved out of the blocks than the relatively suave Pommard premiers. The bouquet is pure and primary, delivering scents of cherries, red berries, a touch of coriander seed, roses, vinesmoke and a superb base of soil. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and very promising, with an excellent core, fine focus and grip, ripe tannins and a long, nascently complex and zesty finish. Another stellar bottle in the making. (Drink between 2025-2075)

John Gilman, View From the Cellar (62), April 2016

A maturing and wonderfully fresh nose is comprised by restrained aromas of various wild dark berries, plum, earth, spice and black tea. There is good muscle to the cool and admirably pure big-bodied flavors that possess plenty of verve on the focused, austere, dusty and linear finish where a hint of tannic edginess progressively appears. This is knocking on the front door of full maturity and while it's not quite there yet, another 1 to 3ish years of bottle aging should see it at its peak.
