Tasting Notes

The 2017 Barolo Bricco Boschis is superb. A rush of crushed raspberry, rose petals, mint, sweet spice and blood orange gives the 2017 its effusive, sexy personality. Medium in body and exceptionally polished, the 2017 is an absolute jewel of a wine. Many 2017s are nervy and in need of time to soften, but not the Bricco Boschis. All the elements are so well-balanced. If I was going to open a wine for someone who was not familiar with Barolo, I might very well open this. It’s impossible not to love the 2017 Bricco Boschis. 2022-2037

Available in numbered bottles, the organic Cavallotto 2017 Barolo Bricco Boschis is a generous and fleshed out expression that opens to immediate aromas of cherry, wild plum and cassis. There are floral notes as well, and some spice, licorice and grilled herb. Like many of the Barolos I tasted from this vintage, the bouquet is accessible and generous now, but the wine is tannic and more austere in terms of mouthfeel, requiring extra bottle age. The hope is that both the bouquet and the palate will evolve at the same pace. From 45-year-old vines, this was a release of exactly 19,410 bottles and 999 magnums. 2024 - 2040

I'd be amazed if there is a more generous, rich, voluptuous wine made in Piedmont than this cuvée. In anyone else's hands, this wine could be a total mess but with Cavallotto's expertise in this magical vineyard, this is just pure pleasure in a glass. It has bags of black cherry fruit, bordering on jammy but kept in check by notable acidity, providing freshness to power the wine through to a very complex and long finish. It will drink well in a decade but is one of those wines where you should be itching to pull the cork from day one. Hedonistic doesn't even begin to cover it.

Farr Vintners, Farr Tasting, October 2020

The 2017 Barolo Bricco Boschis is highly aromatic with anise, dried leather, and burnt orange. Ripe and structured, it offers ripe cherry, turned forest floor, and a long finish. The warmth of the vintage is felt while remaining fresh. Drink 2024-2042.

Tank sample. Soft ruby. Gently sweet red fruit. Pure and scented. Tightly structured but the tannins are so fine they slide across the palate even now. Lovely, elegant, long. 2023-2032

Aromas of rose, wild berry, leather and sunbaked underbrush come to the forefront. Made with organically farmed grapes, the palate shows an earthy elegance, featuring ripe cherry, blood orange, star anise and hints of truffle before closing on an iron note. Firm but refined tannins provide support. Drink 2027–2032.

Castiglione Falletto. Tasted blind. Mid to deep ruby with orange tinges. Deep and brooding nose with a hint of leather and a peppery tingle. Supple and still a little embryonic with plentiful acidity and firm gripping tannins. Elegant, long and balanced but needs time to settle. 2024-2034
