Valandraud 2007

Tasting Notes

90/93
Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (176), April 2008

Very light, but some good berry, mineral and floral character. Little disappointing at this stage. Tasted twice, with consistent notes

Jean-Luc Thunevin’s flagship. Quite thick on the nose. Difficult for the aromas to escape. A definite attempt to produce a cool, sleek wine as opposed to a heavy rich one. Pretty tough tannins on the finish though – very drying and tarry. Big, round supple start and then super-chewy. Ambitious but not desperately exciting or lifted. No kosher cuvée of 2007 shown. Drink 2014-2020

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, April 2008

Good bright medium ruby. Lively aromas of blackberry, black cherry, violet and licorice. Juicy and penetrating, with very good mouth coverage to its blackberry fruit. Not a fat style, even though this year's wine is 100% merlot, but ripe, harmonious acidity gives it real verve and extends the finish. Tannins are ripe and sweet. A very good showing. (Valandraud's second wine, Virginie de Valandraud, was a bit lower-toned on the nose, then pliant and flavorful in the mouth but showing a bit of unabsorbed acidity.)

Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar

Deep colour. Fine, nuanced expression. Lovely texture with rounded tannins and attractive mid-palate fruit. Length and freshness on the finish. Less concentration than in the past but more elegance. Drink 2013-2022. 4 stars.
