Subregion France > Bordeaux > Left Bank > St Estèphe

Grape VarietyMerlot/Cabernet Sauvignon

Owned and made by the Cazes family of Lynch Bages, this is a consistently good wine and deserving of cru classé status. The vineyard is planted with around 50:50 Cabernet and Merlot. Always good value, it can often be attractive in its youth but great vintages can mature for decades. (The 1989 and 1990 are still magnificent).

The 2024 is made from 48% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc. 16 months in oak (45% new). ABV 13%.

Tasting Notes

The 2024 Ormes de Pez has a crisp, tensile bouquet with black olive tapenade infusing black fruit, fine delineation and nicely integrated oak. The medium-bodied palate showcases grainy tannins and a core of black fruit laced with graphite and tobacco, leading to a slightly smudged finish that lacks the complexity of the 2022. Still, this is a decent Saint-Estèphe. Drink: 2028-2045

Mid ruby colour with a sweet, plummy, red fruit profile on the nose. Strawberry laced menthol character hits on the palate which has a crunchy tannic backbone and hits of blackcurrant leaf on the back end. Full of Medocain bite, this is compact and spicy on the finish.

Deep garnet-purple colored. Jumps from the glass with spritely notes of crushed blackberries and raspberries, plus hints of fruit cake, hoisin, and tobacco leaf. The light to medium-bodied palate is soft and lightly chewy with just enough berry preserves flavors and a lifted finish.

48% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc. pH 3.61. IPT 69. Aging 16 months in French oak, 45% new.

The 2024 Ormes de Pez is a very pretty, expressive Saint-Estèphe. Strong floral, savory and earthy elements abound. Bright red-toned fruit, spice, cedar and new leather lend notable punch. This is a very fine vintage for Ormes de Pez. Tasted two times. 2026 - 2034
