A brilliant young wine, the 2020 Mâcon-Pierreclos Tris de Chavigne unwinds in the glass with aromas of crisp stone fruit, white flowers, orange zest, confit citrus, pear and wheat toast. Medium to full-bodied, ample and incisive, its satiny attack segues into a seamless, layered mid-palate, concluding with a long, vibrant finish. Pure and penetrating, it will richly reward patience. Drink 2027-2050.
One of my favourite vintages of this excellent cuvée, the 2020 has now shed some of its gun smoke reduction and unfurls with pristine, crystalline fruit that is deceptively ripe, bringing white peach and a touch of apricot over zesty yuzu and flecks of wood spice. There is still a light struck match quality to this but it is well integrated into the wine. The palate is where things really take off. Jean-Marie's best wines manage great concentration and richness, but incredible freshness at the same time - this wine showcases that perfectly. Cut to the core with tensile acids, the surrounding fruit is very intense and marries riper stone fruits with more of that yuzu flavour. Building in creamy intensity, with just the right level of wood spice, this is a multi-dimensional Chardonnay that bends to Jean-Marie's stylistic goals. Broad and yet driven, it is perfectly balanced and still so youthful. Finishing with apricot, peach and salted lemons, this lingers on the palate and in your mind. A superb wine.
The 2020 Mâcon-Pierreclos Tris de Chavigne is a step up still in intensity and energy, mingling aromas of crisp Anjou pear and green apple with hints of orange oil, iodine, white flowers and freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and textural, it's layered and concentrated, with a tightly wound core, racy acids and a long, chalky finish.
