From shallow brown clay soils, the 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Champ Gain 1er Cru is much more discrete on the nose compared directly with the Clos Saint-Jean; it's more austere yet complex and Puligny-like. The palate is very well balanced, just a little more oak to be subsumed, yet there is real tension and bite on the finish. Very sustained in the mouth, this is about as good a Champ Gain as you will find. (Drink between 2023-2038)
