Coudoulet de Beaucastel Rouge, Perrin - Château de Beaucastel 2005

Tasting Notes

The 2005 Beaucastel Coudoulet Cotes du Rhone is another outstanding example of this Cotes du Rhone made essentially across the border from Chateauneuf du Pape. Notes of tapenade, licorice, smoked herbs, and meat juices interwoven with black cherry and darker fruits are followed by an expansive, broadly flavored, full-bodied wine with no hard edges, gorgeous fruit purity, and a long, spicy, heady finish. This is almost the bottled essence of Provence. Drink it over the next decade or more.

Ruby-red. Deep, rich and ripe, with powerful red fruit aromas and exotic spice notes. Sweet raspberry and cherry flavors are complicated by a wild note of apricot pit. Firm tannins and good acid lift on the spicy, long finish.

Deep red. Spicy raspberry and cherry on the nose, with a gentle anise quality adding interest. Surprisingly supple, with deep red berry and kirsch flavors and good finishing cling. A late tannic jolt reminds you that this could use some more time.

The estate reds include the 2005 Coudoulet, which is a high-class Cotes du Rhone offering up notes of black cherries, blackberry, ground pepper, and hints of licorice and seaweed. It is medium to full-bodied, has good acidity for a 2005, and moderate tannin. This wine should age nicely for 10-15 years.
