One of the finest over-achieving efforts in this vintage as well as a "best buy" for a top-flight St.-Julien, this 2008 is an irresistible success. It reveals an opaque ruby/purple color, lots of unctuosity and a boatload of sweet cassis and black cherry fruit intertwined with notions of licorice, smoke and oak. Full-bodied, remarkably concentrated and stunningly pure and textured, this sensational wine is already drinking well, and will be even better with 2-3 years of cellaring. It should last for 20-25 years. Bravo!
The 2008 Léoville-Poyferré has long been one of the best Saint-Julien’s of the vintage. It has a vibrant, exquisitely delineated bouquet with precise black fruit, cedar and hints of liquorice that unfold seductively. The oak here is beautifully enmeshed. The palate is medium-bodied with melted tannins, a fine bead of acidity, very harmonious with pure red fruit laced with allspice, clove and bay leaf towards the finish. A brilliant wine from former winemaker Didier Cuvelier. Tasted at the Léoville-Poyferré vertical at the château with Sara Lecompte Cuvelier.
Very dark crimson. Seriously spicy intense nose. Thick and rich with great tannins but quite enough ripeness too. There is life here. Cool finish. Very long and vibrant.
The mix of black fruits on the nose gives lots of interest with the cassis tending to dominate. The
palate is full of ripe fruit a good depth of flavour the fruit underpinned by coffee and liquorice.
The finish is lighter long and stylish. 2014-2026
This powerful, dense, full-bodied 2008 is still backward and unevolved, but it possesses a dense purple color as well as sweet aromas of creme de cassis, vanillin, crushed rocks, and flowers. With high but ripe tannin and a long finish, this wine will benefit from 5-8 years of cellaring, and should keep for three decades thereafter.
The 2008 Léoville-Poyferré has a well-defined, quite precise and energetic bouquet with blackberry, raspberry and pencil lead aromas. This is very focused and engaging. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, graphite and pencil box aromas, harmonious in the mouth with a long and refined finish. What a fabulous Saint Julien from Didier Cuvelier, one that satiates the senses (and then some). 2018 - 2040
Tasted ex-château and single blind in Southwold. Didier Cuvelier's wine seems to be on an upward curve in bottles. It has a very attractive bouquet with cedar and tobacco aromas. A lovely "classic" Saint Julien nose. The palate is ripe and well-defined with firm tannins, extremely well balanced towards the elegant finish. This is beautifully made and quite feminine, surpassing my expectations. Tasted January 2012.
A blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. Ripe saturated blackberry on the nose with touches of cedar and smoke all in Poyferre's usual extrovert style. The palate has very good fruit concentration with pure blackberry, blueberry, boysenberry and cedar. Good sense of mineralité and tension on the finish. Great length. Much improvement over the 2007. Dark crimson. Rather raw on the nose - some underripe fruit? Sweet start then a bit rhubarby - smashed fruit. Fades very fast.
