The 2021 Sammarco is a total stunner. What a wine. These days, Sammarco is quite a bit more restrained than it was some years ago. It's a style I find hugely appealing. Dark-fleshed fruit, sage, menthol, tobacco, dried herbs, incense and lavender all race across the palate. Brisk acids and beams of supporting tannin shape the long, beautifully resonant finish. The 2021 was fermented in cement then aged in 500- and 700-liter barrels. It's utterly mesmerizing, but very, very young. Drink 2031 - 2051.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese make up the Castello dei Rampolla 2021 Sammarco. Punchy and very pretty, the wine has a big profile and plenty of depth to contemplate. It initially presents a solid wall of aromas that gradually gives way to a more nuanced expression, allowing dark fruit, spice and rose-like floral tones to emerge individually. There is both power and detail here, and the wine ultimately comes across as fine and very pretty. Drink 2027 - 2045.
Deep and complex wine with a layered profile of restrained cassis, full of vibrancy, blackberries, embers, bark, earthy tones and rusty minerality. Medium- to full-bodied, firm in tannins with a velvety texture, refreshing long acidity, slightly lifted, then a toasty-flavored aftertaste with fruit energy. Drink or hold.
