Rall White 2023

Tasting Notes

Donovan Rall's 2023 Coastal Region White is 71% Chenin Blanc, 26% Verdelho and 3% Viognier. It was first produced in 2008. The formula behind the blending seeks to preserve acidity, although this dynamic winemaker allows malolactic fermentation in his white wines. The Verdelho adds the freshness with cool aromas of crisp green apple and kiwi. This is a lovely wine with a crunchy or snappy quality, and the focus here is squarely on that balanced freshness. This bottle offers outstanding value. Drink 2025-2035.

Now established among the Cape's leading white blends, this is a pairing of Chenin Blanc, 26% Verdelho and 3% Viognier from the Swartland and Stellenbosch. Floral, pithy and effortlessly complex, it's tauter and tighter than it has been of late, with notes of thatch, wet stones, citrus and apricot, negligible oak and a mineral core. 2025-33

A medium-bodied and saline white that has notes of seashells, jasmine, green apples and fresh apricots. Crisp yet textured with a mouthwatering freshness. 71% chenin blanc, 26% verdelho and 3% viognier. Better from 2025.

Substantial wine with many layers. Exciting! Great tension for the money! VGV

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, October 2024

Led by Chenin and Viognier, and always moving to freshness, this white blend is all about its brilliant texture. The nose is subtle and pithy as you might expect from a blend of largely non aromatic varieties - hints of fresh apple, straw and white peach come through. The wine comes alive on the palate, blending notes of cream and acid, pith and silk, this has such intrigue and direction. The interplay of the varieties allows for a playful, layered fruit profile that has edge and savour at once. Lipsmacking and pithy on the finish. This score might look a little stingy in time.
