Jean-Marie Guffens of White Burgundy fame recently bought Chateau Closiot in Barsac (situated next door to Coutet) and produces a cuvee called "Bonneau" - but only in great vintages. The debut 2018 Bonneau scored 95 points in the Wine Advocate - matching Yquem as the vintage's top Sauternes.
The 2025 vintage will be labelled "Bonneau et les Autres" because it also contains grapes from a small parcel called "Placey" situated next to Climens and neighbouring "Piada". The yield was a miniscule seven hectolitres per hectare and Jean-Marie describes this as being "juste incroyable de concentration et d'equilibre". It will be bottled in bottles and halves with diam corks. As with all Guffens-Heynen wines, this is exclusive to Farr Vintners in the UK.
Jean-Marie Guffens' sweet wines from Barsac are always supercharged throwbacks to the powerful sweet wines of the 20th century in this appellation. Bright gold in the glass and powerful in aroma, this shows raw honey, saffron custard and ginger syrup on the nose. On the palate there are waves of poached pear, roasted peach and honeysuckle, with a generous, full-bodied texture that is glossy and sweet. Focused, appetising and pure, this is another excellent sweet wine for the estate.
