Under the administration of Catherine Pere-Verge, Le Gay has become a serious, super-concentrated, potentially long-lived Pomerol. The backward 2006 reveals complex notes of plums, black cherries, truffles, and chocolate in a big, masculine, full-bodied, virile style that begs for cellaring. This dense, chewy, concentrated effort has firmed up considerably, and appears set for a long life. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025+
Tasted at the château, the 2006 Le Gay has an intriguing, attractive bouquet with secondary aromas of truffle and dried blood, an almost ferrous verging on animally aroma that renders it a little rustic compared to other vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, savory in the mouth with a touch of bacon fat infusing the red fruit, just a touch of dryness perhaps on the finish, but this is still a great Le Gay that has the structure to suggest it will give another 15 years of pleasure. It will not improve further, but it will hold strong for a few years yet.
This has lots of new wood, with ripe fruit and hints of coffee and dark fruits.
Dark crimson. Overripeness on the nose. Very sweet but lifted and lively compared with Croix Saint-Georges. Succulent and well balanced on the palate. Lucid. This should offer lots of pleasure in the short term. For those who appreciate this very ripe style.
This powerful, top-notch Pomerol boasts a dark ruby/purple color along with notes of beef blood, crushed rocks, cold steel, flowers, black currants, and cherries. Full-bodied and super-endowed, with substantial tannins largely concealed by superb fruit and extract, the 2006 Le Gay should be drinkable before the monster 2005. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2030.
Tasted blind at Southwold '06 Bordeaux tasting. The nose has mellowed since I last encountered Le Gay out of barrel: ripe, fruit-driven nose with good definition…Morello, redcurrant, wild strawberry and a touch of lime; lifted and feminine. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, saturated tannins, real sappy mouthfeel , silky towards the sensuous finish with beautifully integrated new oak, with notes of black cherries, black coffee and a touch of thyme/bay leaf towards the long and sensuous finish. Wonderful. Tasted January 2010.
Tasted at a negotiant. This smells just little porty on the nose. But the palate is much, much better: full-bodied and very concentrated with chewy tannins. Blackberry, espresso, spice and pain grille. Perhaps lacks a little acidity. Very good depth and very persistency on the finish. Impenetrable now but this could be a long-term proposition. Tasted April 2007.
