CDP Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin, Perrin - Château de Beaucastel 2000

Tasting Notes

That wine was eclipsed by the 2000 Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin. Nearly every 2000 Châteauneuf du Pape seems to be "open for business," and even this heavily Mourvèdre-based effort reveals a richness, density, and accessibility that is unusual for this particular cuvée. An inky/blue/purple color is accompanied by an extraordinary nose of flowers, blueberries, blackberries, graphite, and sweet earth. This full-bodied, powerful, rich effort's tannins are largely concealed by a cascade of voluptuous fruit. An exquisite Châteauneuf du Pape, it will age for another 15-20 years.

The 2000 Châteauneuf du Pape Hommage À Jacques Perrin (60% Mourvedre, 20% Grenache, 10% Counoise, and 10% Syrah) was singing! Open, upfront, sexy and seamless, with awesome notes of saddle leather, Provencal herbs, barnyard, spice and licorice-soaked black cherry and sweet cassis, it hit the palate with full-bodied richness, no hard edges, and an unctuous, heavenly texture. Reminding me of the 1990, yet perhaps just slightly less intense, this is a profound effort that will drink nicely for another two decades or more. 2015 - 2040

Meaty, beefy, big and bouncy. Volume, depth and a wealth of unique character knock you out. Animalistic, but with good breeding, ripe, plush fruits, polished tannins and a very long finish. It's good now and it's going to be even better with a few more years of bottle age.

The surprisingly forward 2000 Beaucastel Châteauneuf du Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrinwill be even better with 5-8 more years of cellaring. An exquisite effort, it boasts wonderful intense notes of licorice, tar, blackberries, raspberries, cherries, and garrigue. Full-bodied, powerful, and rich, with lovely overall harmony, this is a stunning Châteauneuf

The 2000 is the typical blend cited above. It possesses an impenetrable black/purple color as well as a sumptuous bouquet of melted licorice, creosote, new saddle leather, blackberry and cherry fruit as well as roasted meats. Sweet and full-bodied, with great intensity, huge power, and a finish that lasts for 67 seconds by my watch, this is an amazing tour de force in winemaking. Even in a flattering, forward-styled vintage such as 2000, it will need 7-8 years of cellaring, yet this is the most accessible Jacques Perrin I have tasted. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2040.

The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin is a blend of 60% Mourvedre, 20% Grenache, 10% Counoise, and 10% Syrah, the standard blend for this cuvee except for the 1998, which had 60% Grenache and only 20% Mourvedre. The 2000 possesses an impenetrable black/purple color as well as a sumptuous bouquet of melted licorice, creosote, new saddle leather, blackberry and cherry fruit as well as roasted meats. Sweet and full-bodied, with great intensity, huge power, and a finish that lasts for 67 seconds by my watch, this is an amazing tour de force in winemaking. Even in a flattering, forward-styled vintage such as 2000, it will need 7-8 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2040.

The spectacular 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin is opulent, with unreal levels of glycerin in addition to a staggering bouquet of black fruits, new saddle leather, licorice, underbrush, truffles, roasted herbs, and meats. Fabulously dense, with low acidity, it saturates the palate with sweet fruit, glycerin, and pleasure. A candidate for perfection, the 2000 should be accessible upon release, but keep for 20-25 years. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2025.
