The opaque purple-hued 2005 exhibits an extraordinary nose of violets, creme de cassis, charcoal, and spring flowers. Gorgeously pure, opulently full-bodied, with sweet tannins, superb concentration, and a low acid, ripe, tannic finish, it tastes like a top-notch vintage of ripe Bordeaux, but made in California. It can be drunk now and over the next 20-25 years. Bravo!
The 2005 Opus One is deep garnet in color. It is a little closed to begin, soon unfurling to reveal notes of prunes, Christmas cake, mocha, and star anise with wafts of black truffles and tapenade. Medium to full-bodied, the palate offers chewy tannins and just enough freshness to support the understated black fruits and earthy layers, finishing on a stewed tea note.
The 2005 Opus One reveals a nose of blackcurrants, mulberries, and brambly fruit, complemented by some dried fruit tones as the wine begins to mature, and a framed by creamy new oak. On the palate the wine is supple, concentrated and nicely balanced, with a savoury dimension despite its ample endowment of ripe fruit, and a more elegant textural impression than the vintages of the mid 1990s through early 2000s.
