Tasting Notes

(Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese #18) AP: 18 10. This is surprisingly rich and exotic (for a Scharzhofberger Spätlese) on the nose, which driven by slightly honeyed notes of star anise, passion fruit and apple. The wine is intense on the palate, with good zest cutting through the baroque side of the wine. While maybe not as typical as other bottlings (including the auction one) at this stage, this is a fascinating wine with remarkable complexity and intensity. 2024-2039

Jean Fisch & David Rayer, Mosel Fine Wines (13), October 2010

Honey, flowers and herbs on the nose. Wonderful crystalline stuff. Very tightly wound. It seems so clear that this ripeness level suits this site just perfectly. Featherlight yet with masses of interest. The delicate fruit and the sky high acidity seem in perfect balance, even if clearly on a thrilling tightrope. That tightrope analogy seems appropriate for the tightness of the texture too. 8%
