From a rage of blue slate sites (like its dry wine counterpart) the Heymann-Lowenstein 2007 Riesling Beerenauslese Vom Blauen Schiefer mingles lemon candy, pear nectar, and brown spices in a honeyed, pungently botrytized, viscous, yet uncannily juicy manner, boasting acidity and extract that keep its residual sugar from being at all obvious - let alone overwhelming - in the wine's penetrating finish. This may lack quite the complexity of the best of the vintage's Lowenstein Auslesen, but it is amazingly well-balanced; transparent to saline and stony mineral nuances; and possessed of sheer refreshment one seldom obtains from a Riesling this viscous and far-gone on botrytis.
Like candy, this tantalizes the palate with citrus jelly, dried apricot, lime, spice and mineral flavors. Though sweet and unctuous, this has a bright structure and impeccable balance, with great length. Should deepen and caramelize with age. Drink now through 2050.
