As it almost always is, this is notably elegant and really quite fresh in the context of the vintage with high-toned, cool and airy aromas of pure red berry fruit, wet stone and pungent Gevrey-style earth that can also be found on the delicious, complex and beautifully layered middle weight flavors that brim with both minerality and dry extract. The powerful, focused and explosive finish is both graceful and harmonious and this should age well for years yet be accessible young. In short, this is very impressive.
(from fruit picked on September 19; the malo finished barely two weeks before my visit; 75% vendange entier; 100% new oak) Deep ruby-red. Black fruits, licorice, minerals and stone on the nose, with notes of bitter chocolate, espresso and violet that reminded me of syrah. Then sweet, thick and full-a black hole of palate-saturating dark fruits and chocolatey oak, and less expressive today than the village wines. Extremely primary, headspinning wine that finishes with subtle notes of chocolate and salty minerality. "A great vintage," said Esmonin at this point of our tasting. But this is a bit inscrutable today.
The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques sweeps across the palate with beautifully delineated black fruits. This shows tremendous aromatic intensity and fabulous length. With time in the glass, the wine turns more delicate, showing another side of its personality. A note of licorice adds complexity on the multi-dimensional finish. Esmonin used 100% whole clusters for the fruit from the top of the vineyard, but fully destemmed the fruit from the bottom of the hill, resulting in about 70% whole clusters for the final blend. The Clos St. Jacques saw 100% new oak. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.
