A brilliant effort, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is velvety textured and full-bodied, offering hints of sandy, loamy soils, licorice, kirsch and crushed rocks (minerality soars from the glass). Stunningly rich, layered and provocative, it is a classic wine of Provence. This big, mouthfilling, chewy 2010 should drink well for 15-20+ years.
Another sensational wine is the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes. Coming all from the famed la Crau lieu-dit, its notes of cassis, licorice, mint and crushed rock lead to a full-bodied, structured, tannic, yet concentrated 2010 that still needs 2-3 years of cellaring.
The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is superb, with layers and layers of fruit, oodles of glycerin and a full-bodied mouthfeel. The tell-tale licorice, balsam wood, and intense cherry liqueur, roasted herbs and a crushed rock sort of minerality are present in the spectrum of flavors and aromas that this wine presents. Full-bodied and deep, this is a stunner that should drink well for 15 or more years.
