A spectacular effort, especially for this challenging vintage, Olivier Bernard's 2011 Domaine de Chevalier boasts a dense ruby/purple color as well as a big, sweet bouquet of subtle charcoal, graphite, black currants and black cherries. Rich and full-bodied with a multilayered mouthfeel and a long, complex, stunning finish, this is a profound example of a 2011 from a great terroir. Consume it over the next 20 years.
A blend of 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc, the Beauséjour Duffau Lagarosse has a powerful bouquet with lifted red fruits with floral notes underpinned by noticeable creamy new oak. It retains fine definition and is not overpowering. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a very fine structure and great symmetry. This is an excellent Saint Emilion for the vintage that has a lovely caressing finish that belies its backbone. Superb. Tasted April 2012.
This is a little hard and firm now but it is so serious. Full body with firm tannins and a flavorful, intense finish. Excellent style and class. Needs five years to soften: better in 2019.
A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, without any Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2011 Beausejour Duffau-Lagarrosse has a deep garnet color. Notes of juicy blackberries, preserved plums, and Morello cherries spill from the glass, followed by hints of mint tea, dark chocolate, lilacs, and damp soil. The full-bodied palate delivers a fantastic backbone of freshness to cut through the rich, dramatic black fruit layers, supported by ripe, rounded tannins, finishing long with a minty lift.
Massive for the vintage (14.7% alcohol), this blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc from a small 16-acre vineyard was cropped at 21 hectoliters per hectare. It was made by the remarkably talented team of Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt. Inky/purple-colored with notes of crushed rocks, blackberry and blueberry liqueur and hints of charcoal and incense, this full-bodied, rich, dense offering admirably displays its exquisite terroir. Give the 2011 4-5 years of cellaring, and enjoy it over the following 20-25.
What a beautiful nose of forest floor, dark fruits, sweet tobacco, and blackberries. Full body, with firm and silky tannins and a minerally refined finish. Very polished and well made.
