Tasting Notes

One of the more idiosyncratic dry whites of Bordeaux, this 2012, made from a bevy of historic varietals, is outstanding. Notes of orange marmalade, honeysuckle and melons jump from the glass of this medium-bodied, fragrant, distinctive, dry white. Unfortunately, it is very limited in availability. It comes from the northern sector of Bordeaux near the village of Cissac. It should drink well for 5-10 years. Although no one would ever be able to guess it, Retout is made from a blend of 52% Gros Manseng, 32% Savagnin Gris, 9% Mondeuse Blanche and 7% Savagnin ... a blend I have never before tasted!

This is Vin de France rather than Bordeaux Blanc because it's a blend of such non-Bordelais varieties as trendy Manseng, Mondeuse and Savagnin. Deep honey colour. Chock full of character! Acacia honey, greengage, even a bit of beeswax. Then masses of acidity but lots of broad fruit in the middle. Finishes dry and long. Fascinating wine that should have an interesting future. Easily the most interesting 2012 Bordeaux I have tasted. Drink 2013-2018
