Deep ruby-garnet in colour. The cooler vintage has done wonders for the aromatics, bringing ripe red fruit and dried cherries through with a fresh, savoury complexity, but the same luxurious fruit remains. The palate is soft and silky, with ripe tannins offering a cocoa like texture that envelops the succulent fruit at the core. Just starting to show some earthy, savoury complexity, this is still bright and fleshy. There is a lovely line of freshness that lingers on the finish, paring nicely with the seductive fruit. Perfect to drink now, though these wines have a superb record of ageing well.
(made from 67% zinfandel, 23% petite sirah, 7% carignan and 3% mataro): Glass-staining ruby. A heady bouquet evokes cherry pie, potpourri, incense and vanilla, with a bright mineral topnote. Offers and array of ripe red fruit flavors along with notes of allspice and candied lavender. Rich but lively, with excellent finishing clarity and slow-building, silky tannins adding shape. (JR)
The 2011 Lytton Springs is an intriguing wine. It is at once quite tannic, but also medium in body, as most wines are in this vintage. The structure of Petite Sirah is felt in the wine's tannin. Dusty red cherries, flowers and sweet herbs wrap around the finish. There is a translucency to the 2011 that is highly appealing. In 2011, only 50% of candidate parcels were used in the final blend. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2031.
