The 1949 Rivesaltes has an elegant bouquet with beautiful scents of ripe strawberry, orange zest, burnt toffee and licorice. It shows superb clarity and demonstrates a little more intensity than the 1945. The palate is medium-bodied and feels quite thick in the mouth. Strong licorice aromas form the basis of this Vin Doux Naturel with a slight viscosity on the honeyed, sandalwood-infused finish. This is one of the best offerings at the moment and comes highly recommended. Drink now-2025+
Bottled 2013 (in effect a late bottled vintage). 100% Grenache Noir and a blend of different barrels. Walnuts on the nose. Very sweet and round. Drying a little bit with lots of vitality. Still racy. Clean.
Drink 2013-2020
Superb vigorous red, spicy, exceptional length.
70% grenache noir, 20% grenache blanc, 10% grenache gris
Drink 2014-2030
Bright fox red with yellow rim. Mid fox red. Lightish and simpler than some. Great vitality and freshness. Smells of butter and butterscotch. Racy and transparent. Just a little astringent on the finish. 17.5%
One of the most extraordinary tastings recently has been of 19 Rivesaltes Vin Doux Naturels from 2000 to 1933. These naturally sweet fortified wines from 16% to 17.5% abv, were unearthed by Montpellier based oenologue Philippe Gayral. They are still in cask, to be bottled under his brand L'Archiviste. In 1950, 60 million litres of Rivesaltes VDN were drunk in France; today just 1 million. Soon they will cease to exist. One or two bottles are a must for every cellar.
