The fabulous, saturated ruby/purple-colored 1997 Barolo Bric del Fiasc displays a terrific bouquet of tobacco-tinged tar and black cherry fruit. It is a huge, massive, concentrated Barolo with multiple layers of richness. The alcohol level is a whopping 15-15.6%, yet these dry wines are neither over-ripe nor heavy. Magnificently concentrated, they are likely to become more civilized and delineated with aging. While the 1997 is almost too sumptuous to resist, it is only hinting at its ultimate potential. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2017.
