Gorgeous bright and cheerful fruits, lovely dark plum colour, has the look and feel on a young wine, delivering tannic grip and hold. This could begin to be drunk today, but no need to rush, plenty of character and impressive black fruits. Excellent quality, harvest September 20 to October 10.
A self-confident, modern St.-Estèphe with a lot of ripe black fruits and not too much new oak. It’s quite bold and generous, but cool and fresh on the finish. Love the spice! Drink in a year or two, but this will age.
Tasted blind. Very dark crimson. Very suave and sophisticated nose. Very juicy fruit and vibrant. Great attack and even a little hint of hot mustard on the palate! Not heavy. Great vitality.
Drink 2024-2045
At the Southwold 2014 tasting this wine outshone several St Estephe classed growths, cementing it as one of the value picks year on year under the new management and rennovated winery.
Deep purple in colour, with a pure cassis nose that is supported by a light smokiness and underlying cool, graphite edge. The palate is rich, deep and meaty, with notes of blackberry, blackcurrant and roasted game. The tannins, though chewy, melt underneath the fruit and provide a level of approachability that should give this wine a long drinking window. This is extremely well made, with wonderful precision and balance. A real triumph.
A fresh, pure style, with an unadorned beam of cassis acting as the main component, while light white pepper, lilac and iron hints fill in the background. Racy finish. Best from 2018 through 2024. 5,000 cases made.
The Château Capbern 2014 (note the new un-appended name that will be introduced with the 2013 vintage) is a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. There is appreciable volume on the nose, quite floral with incense developing with time. The palate is smooth and velvety on the entry with sweet tannin. There is a dash of white pepper towards the second half of this well-structured, quite sophisticated Saint Estèphe that sports a long, peppery, slightly earthy, masculine finish. Give this four or five years in bottle to allow those tannins to soften.
