Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Groffier's 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Sentiers has an intense bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, quite spicy and slightly oriental in style. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, again, spicy and lively with a sappy, saline finish that lingers long in the mouth. This is a superb, if not particularly subtle, Chambolle-Musigny destined to give many years of drinking pleasure. Drink 2019-2040.
The 2014 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru les Sentiers, from 80-year-old vines includes 80% whole bunch fruit and 50% new oak, would be my pick of the Premier Crus. Nevertheless, it has a more introverted bouquet: blackberry, mulberry and cassis scents, the whole bunch lending freshness and underlying sous-bois aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte and supple tannin, nicely focused and showing the pedigree of this somewhat underestimated vineyard towards the very harmonious, lightly spiced, blood-orange infused finish. This comes recommended.
