Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Chateau Rouget leaps from the glass with preserved plums, spice cake and cassis notes plus touches of underbrush, game and smoked meats and a waft of Provence herbs. Full-bodied, powerful and densely packed with taut, muscular fruit, it's something of a bruiser and yet with an alluring contrast of a plush, velvety backbone and seamless freshness, finishing long and earthy. 2020 - 2040
Tasted blind. Intense and round and full of black-cherry fruit. A little green-vegy on the end – whole bunch? A bit demanding.
Drink 2024-2035
Deep ruby colour. Blueberries and ripe red cherries on the nose with hints of dried herbs and vanilla bean. The palate is round and generous, with creamy red fruit and cocoa-like ripe tannins. This is succulent and full-bodied, a perfect example of Pomerol in 2015. Sweet spices and milk chocolate push through the fruit and add complexity on the finish. This is ready to drink now, but intense and full enough to drink well over the next 10-15 years.
Another gem from the Michel Rolland team is the 2015 Rouget. Offering a hedonistic, fruit-loaded, full-bodied style as well as lots of darker fruits, espresso roast, chocolate and damp earth, it’s a textbook Pomerol that’s going to benefit from a year or three of bottle age and keep for a decade. 2018 - 2028
There is unexpected freshness here in spite of the massive, black fruit and the palate is relatively controlled with fit
tannins. This is a decent wine of the inky, charry style.
The 2015 Rouget is the blend of five parcels around the Pomerol plateau and I took time to taste each of them when I visited Edouard Labruyère. A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc aged in one-third new oak, it has quite a punchy, high-toned bouquet with licorice-tinged red fruit that opens nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, rounded in the mouth with moderate acidity, the Cabernet Franc very articulate. I like the cohesion here, svelte in the mouth with black fruit and allspice fanning out on the structured, sandalwood finish. This is a well-crafted Rouget that deserves wider consumer appreciation. I would not be surprised if this Rouget ends up at the top of my banded score. Drink 2019-2035.
Dark crimson. Sweet and not thick but lively and transparent. Racy and sinewy. Lots of appeal in this wine. GV
