The cold, dry winter and rainy March was followed by a mild spring, producing an early budburst. The hot summer months led to an equally premature harvest with high sugar levels and polyphenols. This was the first vintage under Luis Sottomayor. Deep, youthful colour with a violet rim. There is superb richness of black fruits here, with lots of summer spices and natural vigour - another step to modernity like the 1978, but this is even better, a magnificent Barca Velha. 2017-2050
Deep crimson with an aged rim. Nose SO different from the modern era Douros that I have just been tasting! Very complex nose of autumn leaves, lots of acidity, great depth, still a little chewy but with great acidity and life but it did collapse a bit in the glass. Transparent. Real vivacity, great balance. Savoury yet very ripe. Great classical balance. Hint of orange peel.
