Slightly more obvious wood provides a reasonably neutral backdrop for the more elegant red and dark pinot fruit aromas that are laced with underbrush, earth and hint of game. The more refined, indeed sleek broad-shouldered flavors possess excellent mid-palate concentration thanks to the presence of an abundance of dry extract that once again does a fine job of buffering the fine but dense tannins that shape the beautifully long finish. This caressing and very well-made effort isn't especially powerful or robust but it is well-balanced and should age effortlessly.
Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru from Christian Sérafin has an attractive, perfumed and quite floral bouquet with plenty of red cherries, wild strawberry and pomegranate aromas, the new oak here neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy mouthfeel, good body and a lovely spiciness surfacing toward the Mazis-like finish. I appreciate the tension and length of this Charmes-Chambertin, but it will require several years in bottle to absorb the oak. Tasted September 2017. Drink Date 2022 - 2040
