Tasting Notes

The 2014 Bartolo Mascarello is a wine that makes a mockery of the general negativity around the vintage. Whilst not an obvious powerhouse, it does have concentrated fruit at its heart as well as coiled power yet it is ultra-fresh and elegant with vibrant acidity supporting an already impressive level of complexity. This acidity provides the wine with an energy and tension that often gets missed in more opulent vintages and less deft wine-making. Comparisons between Piedmont and Burgundy can be overused, but there is more than a hint of Musigny about this wine - such is the floral character, elegance and underlying gravitas that it is showing at this early stage of its life. Although a great bottle of wine now, there is no doubt that its finest years lie ahead - one for the cellar. Drink 2022-2040+

This lovely radiant Barolo is another showstopper despite the difficulties of the cool wet vintage. It's incredibly elegant, with alluring scents of perfumed blue flower, rose petal, woodland berry and a whiff of menthol. The focused graceful palate boasts fantastic tension, showing wild strawberry, crushed raspberry, star anise and cinnamon framed in taut polished tannins and vibrant acidity. It's already enjoyable but will also offer good mid-term aging. Drink through 2034.

Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Enticing perfumed spicy cherry and raspberry nose with hints of dark earth. Continues to open up in the glass. Electrifying and vibrant on the palate with long-lasting, powdery tannins. Vibrant, almost tart, chewy cherry fruit on the finish. Great elegance. Drink between 2018-2028.

Here is another very successful expression from one of the appellation's legendary estates at the heart of Barolo. The 2014 Barolo is light and delicate in appearance with a delightful bouquet of wild rose, forest berry and blue fruit. Violets and lavender give the bouquet a pretty sense of lift and intensity that reminds you of the cool climate and long growing season that characterizes this vintage. This wine also offers evident freshness with bright berry flavors and a subtle feeling of crisp crunchiness. The tannins are superbly integrated within the silky and streamlined body of this elegant Barolo. This wine will surely offer exciting bottle evolution.
