Tasting Notes

An underachiever for the vintage, the fully mature 1990 Canon reveals a strong earthy, spicy, cedary, herbaceous character accompanied by sweet currants, plums, and hints of dark cherries and cola. It is more superficial than it should be given the greatness of the vineyard, but the tannins have mellowed, and the wine exhibits an attractive expansiveness. The finish is much too brief for a Premier Grand Cru Classe from St.-Emilion. Nevertheless, it will offer enjoyable drinking over the next 5-6 years.

A deep garnet hue. The nose is typical 1990 with game, dried blood and a touch of beef on the precocious, fat nose. With aeration there is a stronger sense of black cherry cheesecake. The palate if full-bodied, very well focused with fine tannins. Not as “hot” as other 1990’s with more control and elan. Firm structure, this is a solid Canon with bold Cabernet Franc notes towards the long finish. Excellent. Drink 2010-2035. Tasted September 2007.
