This well-known estate consistently performs at a high level, and proprietor Stephan von Neipperg-s 2007 is a beauty. Cropped at 26 hectoliters per hectare, this blend of 55% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon possesses a dark ruby/purple color, a surprisingly full-bodied style with sweet notes of fruitcake, graphite, black cherry, black currant, and incense. Round, full-bodied, and opulent with well-integrated oak, it is a fleshy, full, exuberant wine that is ideal for drinking now and over the next decade. It achieved 13.5% natural alcohol. Drink 2010-2020.
The 2007 Canon la Gaffeliere has a lovely chestnut-tinged bouquet with satisfying, commendable fruit generosity given the growing season, brimming with buxom raspberry and wild cherry scents. The palate is smooth on the entry, quite gamy in quality and curiously reminding me of a fine Stellenbosch Cabernet blend (meant as a complement). I admire the depth and weight of this Saint Emilion, and while it is just beginning to show some dryness on the finish, it should give pleasure for another 5-6 years. Tasted February 2017.
Drink Date 2017 - 2024
Wonderful perfumes already of flowers and berry. Medium-bodied, with good fruit, fine tannins and a bright finish. Lots of citrus fruit and berry. A little hollow. Cabernet Franc comes through. 55 percent Merlot, 35 Cabernet Franc and 10 Cabernet Sauvigno
Dark blueish. Round, cloudlike impression on the nose. Sweet and round and easy, flattering – this sample doesn’t have any dry tannins. Big, bold, ripe fruit on the nose and very gentle palate texture. Definitely ripe enough and already quite nicely balanced even if not for the very long term. Vibrant fruit. Quite long and no painful dry tannins. Riper than most. Quite soft. Drink 2012-2017
(a blend of 55% merlot, 40% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon) Good medium ruby-red. Crushed blueberry, menthol and spices on the nose. Densely packed for the year and quite unevolved, with good mineral lift to the dark berry flavors. Dominated by its cabernet franc, but the merlot here seems nicely structured in the context of the year. Finishes with raspberry and chocolate flavors and harmonious tannins.
Lively, fresh and packed with fruit. Lovely pure expression. Round and supple with middling length and fine, filigree tannins. Elegant but without the intensity of big years. Drink 2012-2020. 4 stars.
