Tasting Notes

The 2021 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese (Auction) opens with a pure and coolish, refined and flinty but most of all intense bouquet that is rather discreet than up front and populated with ethereal notes such as crunchy slate, vegetal and lemon as well as just-ripe stone fruit aromas (white peaches). Round, precise and lush on the palate, with lovely raisin flavors and this mouth-watering salinity, this 2021 WSU Auslese is a Prüm picture-book Auslese of great finesse and delicacy. 7% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2023.

(Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Auction) AP: N.A.. This cask sample of the 2021er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Auction proves still largely primary, smoky, and herbal. Its wildness gives slowly way to licorice, prune, strawberry, cherry, and earthy spices. The wine is still compact and herbal on the palate, but the ripe zesty acidity brings everything in focus as it proves refreshingly light and vibrating. The finish is superb long and pure. This is still very much work in progress and needs a long cellaring before the true magic operates. 2036-2071
