When I first reviewed this wine it was disjointed and frankly difficult yet it has admirably come together a bit better than I thought that it might. To be sure the nose is still on the woody side yet less so than it was with plenty of mint character on the spicy floral and citrus suffused aromas. As I noted in my original review the flavors are huge to the point of being massive yet unlike some 2005s today there is a firm core of acidity to keep the balance on the palate coating and hugely long finish where the wood telegraphed by the nose reappears. I still don't believe that the 2005 Montrachet will go down as one of the all time great vintages for one of the most storied wines in Burgundy yet it is indisputably a fine effort, especially for fans of size, weight and power. Note that I have significantly extended my suggested drinking window now that it seems reasonably clear that this will not become top heavy.
