This wine is produced by the Durantou family of Château L'Eglise Clinet in Pomerol. The fruit is sourced from a section of the Les Cruzelles vineyard with gravel soil and younger vines. This has probably been Farr Vintners' biggest selling Bordeaux wine en primeur over the last 15 years. Year on year La Chenade delivers the goods but the price remains reasonable.

As the vines age here, production of Les Cruzelles rises and La Chenade falls. There are only 840 cases in 2022. It is 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and comes in at 14.4%. Maturation in 30% new oak. Picked from September 1st to 12th.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 La Chenade reveals sweet aromas of cherries, berries, licorice and rose petals, followed by a medium to full-bodied, supple and seamless palate. This suave, charming, fruit-driven Lalande-de-Pomerol is more vibrant than its Saint-Emilion counterpart this year.

The 2022 La Chenade was picked between 1 and 9 September and raised in 30% new oak. This has a perfumed and floral bouquet, with iris and peony infusing the black and red fruit and a light marine influence in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, good depth, white pepper and clove filtering through the earthy fruit on the finish. So much character and personality in this Lalande-de-Pomerol. 2028-2045

This is an outstanding Chenade. The aromatics are full of lift and ripe red fruits, a saline wood smoke offering some added complexity. The palate has a glob of red fruit in the middle that bursts through the tannin and acidity to give a ripe, round but fresh fruit core. The toasting on the oak has been well judged, offering a light char to complement rather than override the fruit. Sumptuous already, it will drink well early in its life.

A focused and polished red with berry, chocolate and walnut character. Medium body. Focused center palate and a fresh finish. Coffee-bean and ripe-seed character. Vivid.

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, April 2023

La Chenade 2022 is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc and has a deep garnet-purple color. It zips out of the glass with ready-to-go notes of juicy black and red plums, boysenberries, and Indian spices, followed by hints of charcoal, iron ore, and dusty soil. The medium to full-bodied palate is plump and juicy, delivering impressive freshness and a soft texture, finishing long and lifted.

A real sign of the vintage to see how the Durantou wines performed in Lalande in the heat of 2022 and here we have fully ripe blackcurrant and black cherry fruits, sweet and highly spiced, careful extraction as you would expect, annd this is good quality, but for me the mark of the vintage are the clove notes on the finish. 30% new oak. Sandy-gravel soils, 28hl/h yield. Harvest dates September 1 to 9.

80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. Cask sample.
Zesty and fresh, the Cabernet Franc offering an extra dimension this year. Plenty of fruit on the palate but length as well. Tannins ripe and well handled. Should drink well early but could surprise with a bit of time in bottle. Should be GV. (JL) 14.4%
