Iron Syrah, Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines 2021

Tasting Notes

The 2021 Syrah Iron probably has the most nuanced bouquet - very cohesive with intense blackberry, blueberry and white pepper scents, the most backward of the three single vineyard sites. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled tannins and a keen thread of acidity, but real structure and density, layers of mineral-rich black fruit laced with black pepper and graphite towards the finish. Superb. Drink 2025-2045.

I like to think of the Iron Syrah as the most ascetic of the Mullineux reds, a dense, backward, slightly ferrous number with lots of blood and guts. Inky, dense and grippy, it's a wonderfully brooding expression of the variety that will reward patience, allowing the damson and blackberry fruit to integrate fully with the tannins and 50% new wood. Drink 2025-33.
