2024 Bourgogne Blanc, Verget

Maison Verget’s Bourgogne Blanc Grand Elevage is a wine that we were first able to offer with the 2022 vintage and it has proved extremely popular from the start. We now have the 2024 vintage of this go-to house white, and it’s a cracker.

An assemblage of fruit from Péronne and Pierreclos and – in 2024 – fruit from Verget favourite Bussières Montbrison, the wine is predominantly vinified and raised in barrels, of which roughly 15% are new. Whilst challenging in the Côte d’Or, 2024 was very much a success in the Mâconnais, giving wines with a disarming combination of power, juicy fruit and minerality.  At Verget they compare the vintage to 2010 and 2014 – a high bar indeed, and one that the wines meet with ease.

It is fair to say that this is everything you could want from a bottle of Bourgogne Blanc: glossy and smooth, perfect for drinking now with its succulent fruit and silky mouthfeel. At just over £18 per bottle including taxes, it will embarrass many grander names from the Côte d’Or; Bourgogne Blanc just doesn’t get any better at this price point. Perfect now and for the summer, the only issue with the wine is that it goes down just too easily; a second bottle in the fridge door will be a necessity.

Our stock is with us and ready for delivery, and offered with a special price of £135 per 12 in bond (£17.08 per bottle inc. taxes) for orders of 24 bottles plus. We don’t think that you can find a better Bourgogne Blanc for the money.

This Bourgogne Blanc receives what Jean-Marie Guffens describes as a "Grand Elevage" - that is to say a similar method of production to his single vineyard wines. Made from grapes picked from old vines in the Peronne Les Légeres and Macon Charnay vineyards, this year it also includes much of the fruit from Verget favourite Macon Bussieres Montbrison. It is matured for 10 months in oak barrels with 15% new oak. Bright lemon in colour with a supple fruit core and light creaminess on the nose, this is a glossy, pliant wine that is perfect for drinking early. The palate is slick and juicy, with succulent stone fruits and a silky mouthfeel. Juicy and lightly smoky on a long, fine finish.

Julian Desplans (wine-maker and right-hand man of Jean-Marie Guffens) says that the 2024 Verget wines have both minerality and power. Picked from September 10th to 28th. They are reminiscent of the 2010 and 2014 vintages.
