The perfume is spectacular with rose petal, cinnamon, raspberry and blueberry yet always so subtle. It's medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannins and a seamless texture. It's 14% alcohol. The counoise whole cluster is opening up this wine with 10% counoise, 30% mourvedre, 30% grenache, 5% syrah, 5% cinsault, 10% other reds and 10% whites. The roussanne is fermented with mourvedre, the syrah with bourboulenc and the grenache with clairette. A dream to drink now. A Chateauneuf for today but a tribute to the past with such finesse. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.
A deep smoke note on the nose – ashy-ness – and crushed red fruits. Dense and brooding, with lovely density and weight here. Pure liquorice and a saline note underneath. Some pepper notes, and richness. Not heavy and still very approachable. 2028-2042
Baked blackberries and a touch of dark chocolate with a violet top note. It has a silky palate, only medium-bodied this year but lovely bright acidity on show. Not hugely concentrated, but there's a good sense of energy and clarity. Importantly, the tannins are smooth and ripe. A crisp, saline vintage of Beaucastel, drinkable young. Has a bit more Counoise this vintage – just over 10% – and only 5% Syrah. 2028-2043.
