Tasting Notes

The 2022 Pinot Noir Angel Flower makes its return after 2021 failed to deliver a crop - spring frosts and cool flowering dashed hopes early in the season. But this comeback vintage has delivered a very complete style. It's calm, collected and equivalent to a ball of silk for the mouth. Slightly riper in fruit weight compared with its sister wine, Earth Smoke, its tannins are fine and rounded, contributing to that mellow approachability even upon release. The 2022 is pure and broody, with dried herbs and subtle cedar notes lingering on the finish. 2024-2031

An almost tawny pale ruby colour in the glass. Despite the pale colour this wine is expansive and provocative on the nose, layereing oodles of savoury spice, saddle leather and dried cherry and red berry fruit. The palate is ethereal yet intense, all in notes of pressed flowers and dried red fruits. Tangy and supple the tannins are seamless and delicate, just propping up the fruit but keeping the sense of weightless power. Long, lithe and complex on the finish.

Light garnet. Aromas of raspberries and sour cherries meld with flowers and a hint of meatiness. Wonderfully supple, gauzy tannins wend their way around a flowing stream of raspberry, sour cherry and candied redcurrant, as fresh wildflowers and aromatic herbs waft on the breeze. Gorgeous texture, fantastic acidity and great length, with an aromatic sweetness that can’t help but make you smile. Incredibly sensual and alluring, and rather shockingly delicious. 2025-2040

Nose a little shy at first, then lots of perfumed red fruit emerges – tamarillo and plum, a dash of spice, a lift of blue flowers. The delicate, dancing palate has surprising intensity of ripe, flowing red fruits, lovely fine, chalky tannins and bright, saline/minerally acidity. Very good length. This is smartly made with no edges but it’s not overly polished either. Biodynamic.

Botanicals collection. Waikari vineyard. Cask sample.
Complex spicy nose. Real freshness and sap. But with sweetness too. Not remotely heavy and very distinctive in a New Zealand context. Lightly peppery finish. Sprightly. (JR)
