The 2013 La Chenade displays a touch more fruité than the Saintayme with red cherry, cranberry and rose petal aromas that are nicely defined. The palate is well balanced with fine, slightly edgy tannin, a touch of raspberry and citrus fruit towards the focused, gently grippy finish. This is a delicious Lalande-de-Pomerol for the vintage and outperforms many 2013 Right Banks with grander reputations.
Made by the brilliant Denis Durantou of Chateau L'Eglise Clinet. The fruit is sourced from a section of the Les Cruzelles vineyard with gravel soil. 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 30% new oak. 1500 case production. A deep ruby colour here, with an earthy, slightly toasty nose of black cherry and plum with notes of black pepper. Sweet and creamy black cherry and vanilla on the palate with balanced acidity and soft tannins. Focused and ripe with good intensity, and a long finish.
Ripe black plum gives a lovely fleshy richness on both nose and palate. The fruit feels ripe the mid palate is supple with depth of flavour at the back. There is a lovely complex black fruited mix on the finish.
2016-27
80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. Fruitcake mix, very plump on the palate, but with quite furry tannins to back it up. Attractive aniseed and juniper bitterness on the finish. Good lingering dark fruit - worth bottle ageing. (RH)
Drink 2018-2028
The La Chenade is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc picked between 26 September and 2 October. It has a pure bouquet, very floral with very pure wild strawberry and red cherries that are already very generous. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry. There is fine tension here, not a powerful Lalande de Pomerol but natural and refined.
