Even better from bottle than it was from cask, this wine has the potential to score even higher as it evolves. Unfortunately, because the yield was only 25 hectoliters per hectare, a very small amount of wine from this 6.5-acre vineyard of 50 year old vines was produced. Black purple in color, with elements of graphite, licorice and camphor as well as a foresty/floral note, the wine is super-dense, full-bodied, powerful, rich and capable of lasting 20-25 years. Thanks to the vintage-s low acidity and ripe tannins, it has a certain accessibility, but this is a relatively massive 100% Merlot, bottled unfined and unfiltered. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030.
Blackberry and spice aromas, with hints of barley. Full-bodied, with layered tannins and lots of fruit. Dense and stylish.
Quite lush, with deftly toasted blackberry, plum and fig fruit carried by enticing Christmas pudding and Valrhona chocolate notes. Has hefty grip on the finish, which really pumps out the dark fruit. Very solid, but will surely need some time to stretch out. Best from 2014 through 2027.-J.M.
Sweet, ripe, concentrated Merlot. Firm tannic frame. Well crafted but a little one-dimensional. Drink 2014-2022.
The 2009 is a strong effort from this tiny six-acre vineyard planted with 100% Merlot. Yields were minuscule at 25 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine has a mind-blowing 14.9% natural alcohol, covered by fat, texture, and depth. Inky blue/purple, with loads of blackberry, kirsch, licorice, and a touch of herbs, the wine is dense, round, opulent, even viscous, with silky tannins and a big, fleshy mouthfeel. It should drink well for 10-15 or more years. (Tasted three times.) Drink 2010-2025.
