Bright pure clear orange red and a vigorous bouquet, detail not clear, rich ripe sunny fruit then slightly dry tannin, long and lovely. Wonderful, but still with the warm fuzzy aspect of what people described at the time as a Californian summer. Plenty to enjoy here but needs to refine with age if it is to be considered one of the true greats.
I was quite taken with this wine, indeed to the point where it makes me wonder if the 750 ml example that I had some years back was in fact a good bottle was this magnum was so far superior as to be almost hard to believe that it was the same wine. Still quite fresh and youthful with only moderately mature fruit, earth and truffle notes introducing rich, sweet, deep and wonderfully complex flavors built on firm but ripe and integrated tannins and superb length. A beautiful wine that is still on its way up. Tasted only once from this format.
